Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana Responds To Allegations of Ebola Cover-up

Fear and ignorance have become obtrusive elements stymieing governmental and international efforts in the fight against the current pervasive West African Ebola Epidemic.
In Ghana, there have been rumors circulating that the government is in cahoots with the hospitals, pharmacies and the Noguchi Memorial Institute Research Institute to cover-up positive tests from suspected cases.
Although none of these rumors have been validated, their continuous existence have brought am ignominy to the aforementioned health collectives.
The yet to be proven allegations against these medical and health related institutions have created uneasiness among the general populace.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) in an attempt to dissociate itself from a statement purporting that it is aware of Ebola cases in Ghana has issued a communiqué to countermand that assertion.
Below is the full press statement issued by the President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana provided to The Accra Report.
PRESS STATEMENT BY THE PHARMACEUTICAL SOCIETY OF GHANA (PSGH) ON VOICE ALLEGING OUTBREAK OF EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE (EVD) IN GHANA
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has noted with deep disappointment and utter shock a statement making rounds in certain social media circles alleging an outbreak of Ebola and attempts by political leaders to cover up several cases and people dying.
The PSGH wishes to state categorically and emphatically that no such assertion was made at the one week Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Koforidua.
The purported claims on the tape are totally false, mischievous, and most regrettable. Reference to our AGM in Koforidua was just inserted by whoever the perpetrator(s) was to attain some credibility for such careless, unguarded and baseless statement.
The discussion on Ebola was led by Dr. Stephen Kaba, the Head of Institutional Care Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) who gave a detailed presentation on case management in the event of an incident.
The PSGH wholly dissociates itself from the tape and challenges any person(s) who has any evidence of such a statement at the AGM to come out boldly and not hide behind a faceless and nameless tape to create such fear and panic and further distort the critical issues discussed at the meeting.
The PSGH re-iterates its firm belief in all the tests and results conducted on all the suspected cases so far by the Noguchi Memorial Institute and wants to put on record that the deliberations on EBOLA at the AGM was to further enlighten and prepare our members across the nation on the threat Ebola posed.
We wish to remind all Ghanaians that the threat of EBOLA required a concerted national alert, commitment and readiness to avoid and/or manage any incident that may arise.
We must strive as a nation to keep the fight against Ebola in particular and our collective health aspirations as a whole devoid of politics, allegations and propaganda of any form and kind.
The PSGH commends all players at the forefront of politics in Ghana today, both the ruling Government and the Minority for the continuous commitment towards consensus building on health issues and challenges. Indeed, health, medical emergencies and sickness knows no party colors.
The PSGH finally calls on the National Security apparatus to immediately investigate the source of the voice/tape and bring any person(s) behind it to face the full rigors of the law.
Pharm. James Ohemeng Kyei
President PSGH
