“This in our opinion would provide the enabling environment to release the productive energies and free the civic capacities of people for development to take place,” the Council said in a statement signed by Nana Dr S. K.B. Asante, the Acting Chairman of the Council.

The statement said “the Council, pursuant to its statutory mandate operating through the Northern Regional Peace Council has already started initiatives, to ensure peace in the area, with relevant stakeholders.”

According to the statement, upon meeting the governing board of the Council to deliberate on urgent steps to be taken to ensure peace in the conflict area, there were some actions considered.

Some of the immediate actions outlined by the Council included a meeting with all relevant stakeholders in the region, who had contributions to make, and a meeting with the regional and district security Councils.

Others included; a meeting with the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, meeting with Non-Governmental Organisations, religious groups who are supporting peace efforts as well as meeting with the Gbugmayili and the Bangyili families.

The Council expressed appreciation to efforts made so far by the Ministers for the Interior, Defence, Gender and Social Protection, the security agencies and other stakeholders to realise normality in the conflict area.

The Council called on the two factions involved in the conflict to remain calm and restraint from any acts of violence.

“The Council, appeals to the media and all those who make statements on the matter to exercise maximum restraint in their pronouncements,” it added.
