Checks by 3FM News in schools in the three northern regions have revealed that the government has yet to make any payment as feeding grants to schools there.
It will be recalled that Bonaboto, a non-partisan developmental association of persons from the Frafra Traditional area of the Upper East region, threatened to encourage heads of senior high schools in the area to close down if government failed to pay their feeding grants.
Another organization, in the Upper West region, Community Development Alliance – Ghana (CDA) has also given government a two-week ultimatum to make payment of these feeding grants in all the affected schools in the three regions – Northern, Upper East and Upper West.
Meanwhile, Northern regional correspondent, Zubaida Ismail, who visited some schools, reports that the heads of various schools are tightlipped about the issue.
But Northern Regional Director of Education, Alhaji Haroon Cambodia tells Zubaida a directive has been given for the schools to be paid.
“The Director General of GES, Mr. Jacob Kor has met CHASS and they discussed the issue of the feeding grants and he gave a directive for the payment to be effected last week.”
When 3FM News spoke to Vitus Azem, a leading member of the Bonaboto Association, confirmed that nothing has been paid.
The situation has raised serious doubt about assurances by the public Relations Manager of the Ghana Education Service, Rev Jonathan Bettey, over the issue.
Earlier when he spoke to 3FM’s Alfred Ocansey, Rev Bettey was emphatic that approval had been given for the schools to receive their grants by the end of last week.
