Pay TV Operator Acquires Media Licence To 2018 World Cup

Pay TV operator, StarTimes has secured broadcasting rights to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. FIFA on Thursday, March 31, officially granted media rights to all 2017-2018 FIFA events in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Besides the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, StarTimes also gets the pay-TV transmission rights in sub-Saharan Africa for all the other 2017-2018 FIFA events. However, there is the exemption of the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 in South Africa.

This simply means that Startimes will air 2018 FIFA world cup matches and all the other 2017-2018 FIFA events to subscribers in Africa. The 2017-2018 FIFA events comprise:

This will definitely pave way for a stronger relationship between the Pan African movement and the world football governing body. StarTimes’ newly acquired rights will be beneficial to up to 42 Sub-Saharan territories across the continent.

The 42 territories are: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Congo DR, Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

According to StarTimes Vice-President, Michael Dearham the newly acquired StarTimes rights, expresses the company’s desire to provide subscribers with the best sports contents.

StarTimes is regarded as the leading digital-TV operator in Africa. The company serves nearly 10 million subscribers and covers 90 percent of Africa’s population with a massive distribution network. The digital TV operator owns a featured content platform, with 440 authorised channels consisting of news, movies, series, sports, entertainment, children’s programs, fashion, religion, etc.
