The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has admonished passengers to join the campaign to help reduce road accidents this Easter season.

Speaking to Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, the Head of Communications at NRSC, Kwame Koduah Atuahene underscored the need for passengers to speak up against indiscipline on the part of drivers and not remain mute when drivers drive carelessly.

He said, some gruesome road accidents have been attributed to human errors, vehicle breakdowns, non-road worthy vehicles and environmental factors like poor weather and road conditions.

The reduction in accidents due to human factors and errors he added, can only be achieved if passengers ‘’ speak against over speeding, overtaken, and drunk driving. If the driver misbehaves, the passenger should speak against it, he said.

He urged all stakeholders including the police to ensure that drivers comply with road traffic regulations. Some celebrities he revealed have also joined the campaign to reduce accident related deaths this Easter season.

The Commission, as of the end of November 2016, had recorded a total of 11,378 road crashes countrywide involving 17,746 vehicles, of which the total number of casualties stood at 12,154 comprising of 1,990 deaths and 10,154 injuries.

The figures, compared with those recorded during the same period in 2015 involving the total number of reported cases- vehicles, injuries and fatalities- showed increases of 14.88 per cent, 14.45 per cent, 33.74 per cent and 20.19 per cent respectively.
