The representative of President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo, on the transition team, Yaw Osafo Marfo, has asked for clarity about alleged fresh recruitments into the public sector, and the award of fresh contracts, after the NDC government lost the elections.

He warned that such last minute deals could have far-reaching consequences for the incoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Mr. Marfo was speaking at the plenary session of today’s [Wednesday] transition team meeting, where he expressed concern about the allegations he claimed to have heard “from the grapevine”.

“We have heard of ongoing recruitment into the security services now which we hope is not true. We have heard of the conversion of temporary staff of political assistants and some of the staff we took on into permanent public servants.”

“We have heard of the awarding of new contracts after the election results were announced on December 9. We’ve heard of the procurement of sales and national assets also after the results,” the former Finance Minister added.

Mr. Marfo however indicated that, he and his team were not going to overreact to these allegations, as he urged the government to be open to consultation if any decision had to be taken.

“We need to be cautious, we need to be transparent, we need to candid and we need to be factual. We are therefore appealing to our colleagues that within this period, if there is anything that needs to be done, consultation needs to be brought on board.”

The 16-member Transition team was officially inaugurated on December 12 by President Mahama.

By the provisions of the Presidential Transition Act 2012 (Act 845) the Transition team is to make comprehensive arrangements to regulate the transfer of political power following a Presidential election, and to do this by forming various sub-committees that will be responsible for different aspects of the process of the transfer of power.

Government had earlier indicated the Transition team meeting today [Wednesday] was expected to settle on the committees to be established and the composition of each committee so that the various committees can begin the process of planning the inauguration ceremony, handing over the machinery of the Civil Service.
