The new government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed that the controversial nursing and teacher trainee allowances will finally be restored fully in the month of March, 2016. This was stated by the newly elected Vice President of the nation, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The Vice President has said that the NPP government, will announce the restoration of the allowances in their first budget in March, as promised during the campaign season.

This goes to show that the new government is really keen on the promises it made to Ghanaians, during the electioneering. While campaigning for the country’s leadership position, the NPP had promised to restore the scrapped trainee allowances, three months after it has been elected into office.

Addressing a gathering at Fadama in Accra, Dr. Bawumia said government is committed to the restoration of the allowances and will not go back on its promise.

The Ghanaian government and resident teachers and nurses trainees in the country, have been at loggerheads over the issue of allowances.

In 2014, the then ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, scrapped trainee allowances; but the move was met with massive protests by teacher trainees across the country. Government had explained their reason to be that, trainee allowances scale down the number of students granted admission into schools, as colleges are given a quota. This according to the NDC, was in other for government not to exceed the stipulated allocation, of trainee allowances.

The NDC’s explanations on the issue, had instead of calming the heat of the agitations, attracted more criticisms against it. Several attempts by the Mahama-led administration to reintroduce the scheme, failed to impress the students.

The then opposition NPP however, bought the hearts of Ghanaians with their message of change; which included restoring the trainee allowances. The NPP used the subject as one of the bedrocks of its campaign, assuring it would restore the scrapped nursing and teacher trainee allowances, three months after it assumes office.

It is now evident that the NPP government is fully committed to fulfilling the promises made to Ghanaians, prior to the December elections.
