Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Madam Charlotte Osei made the declaration Friday evening after what would be described as a toughly competitive election.

The 72-year-old NPP flagbearer polled 5,716,026 to beat incumbent President Mahama who got 4,713, 277 votes.  According to EC statistics, NPP’s Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recorded 53.85% of the total votes cast as against 44.40% by NDC’s President John Dramani Mahama.

NPP supporters have since taken to Nana Addo’s residence as well as the streets all over the country in jubilation for their victory.

President John Dramani Mahama has called Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President-elect to concede defeat as well as congratulate him on his victory.

Ghana’s new president made this known in a Facebook post. Read post below:

A few minutes ago, at 7:51pm, the President of the Republic and the NDC presidential candidate, H. E. John Dramani Mahama, called me on the phone to congratulate me on my victory in the presidential election of 7th December 2016.

He wished me the best of luck and God’s blessings, and assured me of his full co-operation in organizing the transition from his administration to mine.

I thanked him for this graceful gesture, which is in the finest traditions of Ghanaian statesmanship and, on my part, assured him of my cooperation for a successful transition.

I also thanked him for his service to our nation and said that I felt sure that his contribution to the welfare of our Republic was by no means over.

The other five presidential candidates had earlier conceded defeat and as well congratulated Nana Addo as the winner on Thursday even when the EC had made the final declaration.

The NPP Flagbearer in response extended his gratitude to their congratulatory messages. In a tweet on Thursday, Nana Addo said:

I’ve received words of congratulation from Mr Greenstreet, Mrs Rawlings, Dr Nduom, Dr Mahama & Mr Yeboah. I thank them. May God bless Ghana.

Nana Akufo-Addo’s win makes him Ghana’s fifth president under the fourth Republic while President Mahama’s defeat makes him the first incumbent president to lose re-election since 1992 when Ghana returned to multi-party democracy.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s 2016 campaign for the presidency was on the back of a manifesto themed “Change: An agenda for jobs”.

From what happened in Nigeria’s election last year and that of the United States this year, one can rightly conclude that the message of CHANGE is a magic that can earn any opposition victory at all odds!
