The Minister for Information, Mustapha Hamid, says the Nana Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party government will remain committed to the actualization of the ‘Ghanaian dream’, where citizens could make the best out of opportunities available to them, to create the required wealth and be self-reliant.

According to the minister, the time has come for all to appreciate the fact that “being Ghanaian goes beyond possessing a passport and an identification card to having self-belief that this land is where you can make the best out of your talents and that there are opportunities to exercise these talents to become successful.”

Speaking in a radio interview yesterday, Mr Hamid said government would tailor its programmes through the various sectors to promote a sense of nationhood and self-confidence, especially among the youth, for the development of the country.

“It is important that we instill into the youth, that this land is rich and we can live here and make the best out of it for ourselves, just like the American dream we fondly talk of, which simply encourages its citizens to be independent and create wealth for themselves,” he said.

The Minister hinted that the Ministry of Education would soon introduce reforms in the educational system to ensure that the history of Ghana is taught from the basic level, to help instill a sense of pride and selflessness among students, to drive the growth of the country.

“The situation where the history of Ghana is only taught at the secondary level is very unfortunate because, if from infancy we do not understand our history, it will be difficult to understand where we are going as a country as we develop, so it’s important we redirect our focus to move this country forward,” he observed.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, in his 60th anniversary celebration speech, among other things, expressed the need for Ghanaians to build on the selfless efforts of the founding fathers, to quicken the economic development of the country.

According to him, sixty years of independence means “you have the freedom and ability to make informed decisions in life without having to ask other people for permission, help or money and you take full responsibility for seeing things through.”

He maintained: “we have run out of excuses and it is time to set Ghana on the right path and get our country to where it should be. The challenge before us is to build our economy and generate a prosperous, progressive and dignified life for the mass of our people. Then, our independence will be meaningful and we will have a Ghana beyond aid.”
