The recent involvements of Nigerian celebrities in Ghana’s political campaigns have raised eyebrows among some political stakeholders. A lecturer at the Political Science Department of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Amoako Baah, has described the involvement of Nigerian celebrities in Ghana’s political campaigns as inappropriate.

Some Nigerian celebrities in recent times, have been seen with flagbearers of the two major contending parties; President Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Nana Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to reports, Nigerian actor Nkem Owoh, known in showbiz as Osuofia, recently featured in an NDC campaign advert. A similar event is that of Nigerian publisher and business mogul, Chief Dele Momodu, who indicated that President Mahama deserves praise for his good works across Ghana.

In addition, are photos of Nigeria’s veteran actor Hanks Anuku, clad in NPP paraphernalia circulating on the internet. These photos have raised questions, as to if the actor is campaigning for the opposition party.

This has become a worrisome issue to Dr. Amoako Baah, who has decided to speak up against it. Speaking on Radio Universe on Monday, Dr. Baah bemoaned the campaign by the foreigners, saying it is unfortunate for such incidents to happen in Ghana’s political history.

According to him, it is very degrading for government to allow Nigerian celebs in Ghana to take part in the country’s political campaigns. He continued that Ghana’s acceptance of foreigners in their political campaigns, gives the impression that Ghanaians do not know what is happening in their own country.

However, some have tried justifying the act, saying the said Nigerian celebs probably have affiliations to Ghana in terms of businesses and the likes, which have made them to understand the country and its economy better. But the lecturer responded by saying that as non-Ghanaians, they have no right to tell Ghanaians whom to vote for in a election.
