NDC Will Force Akufo-Addo To Act – Kofi Adams

The National Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says if the President fails to do what the Constitution of Ghana has mandated him to do in keeping the country’s peace, they will force him to do so.

Kofi Adams says if President Akufo-Addo fails to maintain and protect the peace like the country handed over to him by former President John Mahama, they will resort to a series of mass action to whip in in line.

Earlier, the party had copied Joy News in a statement in which it gave the President a seven-day ultimatum to act describing his government’s attempt at maintaining peace, law and order as weak and grossly incompetent.

“The seven days is even too long. We believe that between now and then, we want to see much action and assurances so people who want to do business with Ghana feel safe and secured.”

Speaking to Evans Mensah on Joy FM’s Ghana Connect programme Friday, Mr Adams said this has become necessary because government has failed to do what is it mandated to do by protecting the citizenry and providing security.

He said they would use all options available to them both legal and constitutional to demand that government does the right thing.

According to him, the NDC thought that the earlier attacks were excesses of election victory but to the extent that it spread to state institutions, the party cannot sit and watch on.

“These acts must stop and the President must be seen to be leading the process to stop it,” he said.

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander has taken responsibility for the failure of his men to act which has given the Delta Force vigilante group a field day to misbehave, but Mr Adams said the buck stops with the President who is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. “He [president] is the very person why these people are misbehaving and they have indicated they work for him. Anytime they misbehave, that has been their position and none of them has said they work for the Police Commander.

“I think it is a black Thursday that we should never have witnessed. Ghana has come very far and we cannot allow this reduction since President Akufo-Addo took over. We cannot allow it to carry on, it’s bee one too many,” he said.

Regarding the NDC’s demand for the resignation of the Interior Minister, Minister for National Security, Inspector General of Police (IGP) and National Security Coordinator, Mr Adams said they have proven that they cannot earn their keep and it is time they make way for someone else.

He said they want government to stop paying lip service to the issue and act recounting that despite the President speaking to the issue during his first State of the Nation Address and also on his recent visit to the Ashanti region.

The National Organiser said all the President does is talk but not much has changed apart from more attacks on people and institutions.

According to him, it is damning for anyone to make the comparison between what happened in Kumasi and the Montie 3 incident because the physical attack on the judiciary by a group like the Delta Force is unprecedented.

“We want to see deeds not words,” he said.
