NDC Wants To Understand What Went Wrong

Following Mahama’s defeat and the dismal show of the party during the December polls, the NDC is trying to understand the cause of the embarrassing defeat. This is evident as the party has gone ahead to form a 13 man committee to find the cause of the defeat.

The move is coming after the Functional Executive Committee of the party established the committee with the approval of the Council of Elders in Accra on Wednesday night.

Chaired by former Minister of Finance and Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Prof. Kwesi Botchway, the committee is expected to investigate the cause(s) of the party’s abysmal loss to the NPP in the general elections, as well as to make recommendations with the aim of forestalling any such defeats in the future.

It will be recalled that NPP’s flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo beat the incumbent, President John Mahama by 53.85 percent to 44.40 percent of valid votes cast. The defeat made President Mahama to suffer the first defeat of a sitting president in an election since the start of the fourth republic.

The NDC did not only lose the presidency, as they also suffered massive parliamentary defeat, leaving them as the new opposition in the country.

While most Ghanaians are of the opinion that the party fell from favour as a result of poor leadership and failed promises, the party is trying to have a more closer and in-depth look.

The move is important as indications from the party shows it is getting set to organise itself for the 2020 elections. This is mostly as some members of the party are already calling on the defeated candidate, President John Mahama to get set as he will be back on the ballots in four years time.
