NDC Questions Wisdom of Presby Moderator

Deputy National Organizer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Joshua Akamba has descended heavily on the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey over his nation wreckers comments on the Montie petition saga.

Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey, in a recent comment, said, those signing the petition to get the President to free the Montie trio are nation wreckers who must be condemned for what it’s worth.

“A nation is an entity, a people ruled by law, so, if there are any people who are a lawless society then they are doomed. [In] a country like America, when you break the law, even if you are the President or a presidential candidate and they get you, you’ll go to jail. I hear some people are saying what the Judges did was not right. Look, threatening to kill a judge, it has happened before in Ghana, whoever has issues with the sentence of these three people are nation wreckers who must be condemned and not entertained,” Prof Martey said.

But responding to the comments by the Presbyterian Moderator, Joshua Akamba said, he wonders if indeed the Moderator is wise.

According to him, it sounds strange that a man of God can call the petitioners as nation wreckers because they supported persons who have shown remorse for wrong doing.

”I signed the petition together with my family. So I’m responding appropriately because he has mentioned me as a nation wrecker. I’m only telling him to get out of his shell of politics and leave the Presby Church alone; because there are distinguish and honourable people in the church so he joins Nana Addo’s campaign. He should stop hiding behind the pulpit and mount the political platform so we can know that, he is a politician and not a minister of the Gospel.”

He added, the Moderator do not have to accuse people wrongly considering his position as a Reverend, presiding over different people from different political platforms.

”I know the Moderator is an NPP, so I will respond to him as a Politician. He cannot hide behind the pulpit and be doing politics. It is unacceptable.”

Three persons, Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn, and Salifu Maase, aka ‘Mugabe’, were cited for contempt by the Supreme Court for lowering the authority of the bench when they threatened to kill justices of the court during a discussion on political talk show Pampaso, hosted by Mugabe on Accra-based Montie FM.

After their incarceration, a group calling itself Research and Advocacy Platform (RAP), opened a petition to collect signatures in the bid to persuade the president to exercise his prerogative of mercy to pardon the trio.

The petition was presented to the Presidency and has seen been referred to the Council of State for consideration.
