NDC Majority Has Failed Its Own Probity Test

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea is shocked the NDC party and government, who describe themselves as ‘apostles of probity and accountability’ have shot down moves to help the President purge himself of corruption allegations.

According to him, the allegation of bribery and corruption will still be an albatross around the neck of President John Mahama after the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Edward Doe Adjaho threw out a motion calling for an investigation into the President’s conduct.

The Speaker of Parliament dismissed a motion filed by the Minority to investigate President Mahama after he admitted receiving a luxury vehicle, a Ford Expedition, as a gift from a Burkinabe businessman in 2012.

Mr. Doe Adjaho in a 15 minute address of the House said the motion lacked merit since the case is being investigated by a state anti-graft institution, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

But lawyer Atta Akyea on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday said “Ghana’s democracy has been turned upside down”.

He explained that, the basis on which Rt Hon. Doe Adjaho dismissed the motion was not grounded in law.

The Abuakwa South MP wondered why the Minority were not given the opportunity to defend the motion to justify the need for a bi-partisan committee.

“How can he [Doe Adjaho] play God to know what we will say? He should have given us a hearing” he stressed.

The NPP man described as laughable the claim that CHRAJ was investigating the matter when in fact “the 1992 Constitution never subordinated Parliament to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, CHRAJ”.

Lawyer Atta Akyea said all they sought to do was to clean President Mahama of the corruption tag that in his opinion has dented his government.

But Majority MP for Ablekuma Central, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie said the “back to sender motion” filed by the Minority was just to score cheap political points.

Rather, he urged the NPP MPs to go to the Supreme Court to seek interpretation if they feel peeved about the Speaker’s decision.

Hon. Tetteh Chaie added that, Parliament will set up the bi-partisan committee to investigation the issue by a court order.
