The President-elect made this statement in a meeting with the Private Enterprise Federation at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). According to him, the project would help his government’s decision to formalize the Ghanaian economy through national data.

Nana Addo explained that his government under the umbrella of the National Identification Authority (NIA), would coalesce data from various national identification agencies such as the police, the National Health Insurance Scheme, Passport office, immigration, courts, the Ghana Revenue and the Driver Licensing Authority..

The NIA was set up by erstwhile President John Kufuor in 2003, to provide storage, protection, and management of the identities of Ghanaians and foreign nationals in the country. The institution was meant to merge the various National ID registration documents in one database.

However, the system has been ineffective for the past eight years since the governments of the National Democratic Party (NDC) failed to complete the activity.

The dormancy of the Authority was one of the messages of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the December 7 election. The party accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of neglecting the Authority to the detriment of the country.

But Nana Akufo-Addo who defeated incumbent President John Mahama in last two weeks election said he would revive the Authority to work again.

The process of giving our country a National Identification system began president Kufuor’s time. Eight years later, nothing has been done about it and it is our intention that within the very first year of our mandate, we intend to complete the process of national identification, the President-elect said.

Nana Addo further assured that his government will be committed to creating a competitive economy that will produce sustainable growth. He however, pointed out that to achieve the goal, both the public and the private sector will be actively involved.

According to Akufo-Addo, his administration will ensure that all unreasonable policies including high taxation will be put to an end in order to create an enabling environment for private businesses and investments to thrive.
