Nana Addo On Tribal Politics Condemns Mahama’s Comments

Flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akuffo-Addo, has urged Ghanaians to reject tribal politics, which has become the order of the day among politicians across the country. Akufo-Addo says that such move, if not curtailed, the trend could derail the peace in the country.

Nana Addo’s comments follows President Mahama’s remarks, deemed ethnocentric against the running mate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Speaking to NDC supporters, Mahama had said that the NPP is anti-northerners would never allow any northerner in the party, progress in his political ambition.

The President made reference to Bawumia, saying the NPP’s running mate would never be allowed to run as President on the ticket of the party, because he is a northerner.

Mahama has come under severe criticisms from political stakeholders; following his remarks which has been described as tribal comments, aimed at tarnishing the image of the opposition party.

Addressing party supporters at a rally in Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo region on Friday, Nana Addo called on electorates to ignore such comments and work towards achieving victory for the NPP on December 7, 2016. The NPP Flag bearer said that the opposition respects all of its members, irrespective of where each comes from.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from – whether you are an Asante, Dagomba, northerner or whatever, we are all Ghanaians so let no one try to bring disunity amongst us by engaging in tribal politics.”

He said:The NPP Flagbearer raised calls for unity among Ghanaians, especially in this electioneering period. Nana Addo on tribal politics, urged Ghanaians to stand up for peace and unity, which is what is needed for the country’s progress and prosperity.

Nana Addo had earlier condemned the tribal comments made by President Mahama against the NPP. Speaking to thousands of supporters at Akim Oda on November 19, the NPP Flagbearer said he found such statements very unfortunate. He had pointed out that such statements are characteristic of a President who has no plans of presiding over a unified country and is willing to do anything to win an election.
