Chief of Gbese Traditional Area, Nii Ayi Bonte, made a promise to destool himself, if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is defeated in the December 7 elections. Well, Mahama has lost and some stakeholders who took his ultimatum serious are demanding for an implementation.

Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper Kweku Baako, has charged the media to compel the Ga chief to speak. Baako is angered by the fact that Nii Ayi Bonte II, went against the constitutional provision which forbids them from being partisan.

The 2016 pre-election period, saw tons of endorsements from traditional rulers including notable chiefs across the country. Despite warnings by the National House of Chiefs against traditional rulers publicly declaring support for political parties, many chiefs defaulted and went ahead with their endorsements.

Chief of Gbese Traditional Area, Nii Ayi Bonte was one of the many chiefs who went too far with their endorsement. The Ga chief who was so passionate of the NDC had stated that, if Nana Addo is voted as the president of Ghana after 7th December, and subsequently becomes Ghana’s President come 7 January, 2017, he will destool himself!

Nana Addo however, won the 2016 presidential elections after polling 53.8 percent of the valid votes cast, to beat incumbent President Mahama, who secured 44.40 percent of the votes.

Mr. Baako is now of the opinion that the Ga Chief should speak on how he feels about Nana Akufo-Addo’s win. Mr Baako also demands that the chief should tell Ghanaians if indeed, he will abdicate his stool as he pledged before the December polls. The veteran journalist feels the chief owes Ghana an explanation of what he intends to do after his predictions failed.

The veteran journalist had been chastised earlier this year, for saying that chiefs who endorsed political parties were unwise.

But having been vindicated by Akufo Addo’s victory, the veteran journalist has maintained his stand, as he continues to wonder why chiefs in the likes of the Gbese Manste would make such over-the-board endorsements.
