The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has charged parents to prevent their children from spending time at home watching television at the expense of their education.
He explained that although children had the right to watch television, there was the need for them to desist from sacrificing their education which held the key to their future.
The Asantehene said although it was the responsibility of teachers to teach children at school, it was also behoved parents to complement this effort by supervising or ensuring that their children studied at home, especially in the evening.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu gave the advice in an address read on his behalf by the Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, at a ceremony to dedicate two education facilities at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District in the Ashanti Region.
The projects are the renovation and furnishing of Lady Julia Information Communications Technology (ICT) Centre and the renovation and furnishing of a three-classroom block for the Mpasatia Methodist Junior High School.
The occasion was used by the Ghana-China Friendship Association (GHACHIFA) to present exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, school bags and other educational materials to the pupils in the area.
ICT Centre
The ICT centre was renovated and furnished at the cost of GH¢100,000 with funds provided by the Chinese Embassy in Ghana and the Otumfuo Charity Foundation, while the Mpasatia community provided an old building structure.
The centre, which will serve as a pilot ICT centre for the Atwima Mponua District, has been equipped with more than 50 computers and accessories, a projector and other facilities.
Communities which will benefit from the centre include Bedaabo, Srebooso, Aboapeh, Beposo, Yonso, Anyinmanso, Kwanfinfin and Abaasua, among others.
Classroom block
The three-classroom block was renovated at the cost of US$11,921 by Olam Ghana Ltd as part of its corporate social responsibility.
The renovation of the classroom block was made possible through the effort of the Otumfuo Charity Foundation which initiated the process to bring relief to communities in need of assistance.
The Human Resource Manager of Olam Ghana Ltd, Mr Clement Boakye Acherekoh, said the company aimed at supporting responsible development of agriculture, improving the quality of life of people in its operational area, as well as fostering volunteer activities.
Chinese support
The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Sun Baohong, said with the rapid development of global Internet Technology (IT), the IT industry had become an important driving force for economic development and social progress.
She said China was ready to support Ghana to develop its IT system since the Internet had become a key instrument for global economic growth.
The ambassador said in the last three years, the Chinese Embassy had committed to improving Ghana’s ICT infrastructure and helping Ghanaian students master IT to better prepare for the age of big data.
She stated that so far, the embassy had built eight ICT classrooms in seven regions of the country to help thousands of students to have access to IT, adding that it was part of efforts by China to deepen its ties with Ghana.
Ambassador Baohong said last year, 518 Ghanaian students received various scholarships to study in China, all geared towards the deepening of ties between the two nations.
The Executive Director of the Otumfuo Charity Foundation, Dr Thomas Agyarko-Poku, commended Olam Ghana Ltd, the Ghana-China Friendship Association and the Chinese Embassy for their support towards the development of education in the community.
