Sonia Ofori Ansong, the mother of 15-year-old Kervin Kofi Moses, a first year student of Achimota SHS, has called for the immediate closure of the institution as she believes their negligence led to the death of her son.

Kervin died on Sunday, December 4 at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra after being transferred from the Achimota Hospital, where he was admitted and was being treated for an undisclosed illness.

According to his mother, Kervin had earlier in the week before his demise called and asked to be taken to the hospital because he felt unwell but was refused permission to leave school by his housemaster.

Speaking exclusively to 3news.com, Mrs Ansong described the school’s attitude as appalling and is demanding its closure with immediate effect while investigations are conducted.

“On Wednesday, November 30, my son called and told me he wasn’t well. So, immediately I called the house master and asked if I could come for him but he said ‘No’”.

Mrs. Ansong stated that the housemaster (name withheld) stated that he will get in touch with her when the need be.

“I don’t know what he went to tell my son, because he [my son] called back and told me not to call the house master again, which really took me by surprise.

Achimota School was founded in 1927 “I then received a call from the housemaster on Friday, December 2 asking me to meet him at the Achimota Hospital, so I quickly rushed there only to find my son restless without any sight of [him] the housemaster.

“The nurses on duty told me it was beyond malaria but were still treating him so I called the housemaster only for him to come and tell me it was no issue because some issues are more serious than mine.

Mrs. Ansong said her husband, who is also an old student of the school, called and even spoke to the housemaster.

“I asked for an ambulance to be made available to transfer my son to the 37 Military Hospital on Saturday where he was admitted until 6:30am on Sunday, when he passed on”.

She disclosed to 3news.com that she was told her son had Malaria 3plus which hit his brain.

Mrs. Ansong expressed utter dismay at the way her son was handled by the School and hospital authorities and has called for the closure of Achimota Senior High School, demanding full investigations into the cause of her son’s death.

The housemaster declined to speak when he was contacted by 3news.com, stating he would only do so with the authorisation of the headmistress of the school.
