President-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo, has asked for more time to enable him name ministers who will serve in his government from January. Akufo-Addo is expected to present the list of his proposed ministers to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for review, ahead of his swearing-in on January 7.

According to reports, Nana Addo failed to present his ministers at a meeting with NEC on Thursday, December 15. The meeting which was scheduled for the stakeholders to deliberate on the matter, ended with the president-elect asking for more time to take the decision. Another meeting however, has been set between the President-elect and NEC, to bring closure on the matter.

As we know, speculations peak in every transition period -after an election, regarding possible political appointments in the new government. There have been many speculations about persons who are likely to be awarded positions in the new government.

Although the list is yet to be made, some persons have begun making suggestions on personalities to fill key positions in the Akufo-Addo led administration. Member of Parliament-elect for La Dadekotopon, Vincent Odotei Sowah, and former Minister under the erstwhile John Kufour administration Alan Kyeremanteng; are among those tipped as likely ministerial appointees to serve in the new government.

But Ghanaians will have to wait a little longer to find out who Nana Addo’s ministers are. Amid the massive speculations, some political stakeholders have advised Nana Addo not to be pressurized into selecting amateurs as ministers.

A former rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, has advised the President-elect, to appoint more experienced hands as ministers in his government, rather than exuberant youth with no experience. According to him, the country’s current economic challenges require more experienced persons to manage it.
