Mitrelli Group of Companies, an Israeli conglomerate, has indicated its desire to complete the 44-year old abandoned maternity and children’s block projects at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

As a sign of showing its interest in winning the contract for the project, the company, led by its representatives last Monday, March 20, together with the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, and management of the facility toured the project site with the sole aim of assessing the extent of work to be done.

Led by Gur Katz, the Mitrelli Group from Israel are in the country to find the possibility of landing the legal contract to start the project. If offered the contract, the company, according to Mr Katz, intends to fully complete the project, stuff it with standard hospital equipment and give the necessary training to handlers of the facility.

And before they return to Israel, members of the delegation throughout their stay will be meeting with key players on the project to find ways to settle on modalities of getting the job at the teaching hospital.

Mr. Katz said: “We are ready to start work on this project to ease the age-long problems at the hospital. Even if this contract is given to us today, our company is ready to do a great job and it is a promise.”

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, on his part said he was committed to the completion of the abandoned KATH project which was begun some 44 years ago by the Acheampong regime.

According to him, since assuming office, about five agencies had contacted him wanting to contribute to the project to ensure its completion in order to serve the region and the entire country.

Mr Osei-Mensah observed that at the moment, the situation at KATH was not the best because of lack of space to accommodate patients.

Patients and nursing mothers, he said, were left with the option of sleeping on the floors and on the corridors of the hospital, a situation unbefitting of Ghana.

He said: “I have resolved that by the time I leave office as the regional minister, that project would be completed. Since I assumed office, several agencies, about five of them, have knocked on my door wanting to assist in ensuring that the project is completed to serve and benefit the region and the entire country.

“I have visited the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and currently what is going on at the maternity ward is not the best due to inadequate space.”
