Central Regional minister-designate, Kwamena Duncan, is promising an education endowment fund to provide scholarships to pupils who score between aggregate six and10 but cannot afford secondary education.
Teachers whose efforts result in the pupils getting between aggregate six and 10 would also be rewarded, Mr Duncan promised on Accra-based Onua FM’s Yen Sempa show on Tuesday
He said poverty is high in the region for which parents suffer to fund the education of their children.
“There are thousands of children in public schools who are brilliant but there is no funds to push them after the basic education”, he noted.
“Armed robbery, stealing, prostitution, streetism, among other anti social acts are high in the region,” he said, indicating that education could help bring such vices under control.
He added: “teachers in any public school who will ensure that these children get 6 to 10 aggregate will be taken care of better… You have given them power”.
According to Mr Duncan, if the pupils stay in school longer, the danger of teenage pregnancy and stealing will be reduced.
Mr Duncan assured he would help residents in the coastal areas, noting a coastal development fund will help develop their communities, especially so when the fish stock in the sea keeps depleting.
“During bumper harvest, they must stock fish, so we shall have cold store in the coastal areas for them to store their fish. We shall have processing factory where they can process their fish and we will have to do all these to add to the coastal economy,” he said.
He said about 80 per cent of land in the region is fertile hence his administration would support them to grow more cocoa, oil palm, and other farm produce.
