The motion for the election of Professor Ocquaye was moved by the new Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensa-Bonsu, who gave a brief profile of the new speaker, and implored the House to approve him in the interest of the country.

The Chief Justice Georgina Wood then led the new speaker to swear the oath of office amidst cheers from the chamber.

The new speaker promised to uphold the sovereignty and integrity of Ghana, and vowed to protect, defend and protect the constitution of the republic of Ghana.

Prof. Oquaye’s political life Mike Oquaye served as the Second Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament between 2009 and 2013.

He also was Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya constituency, a strong hold of the NPP, from 2005 to 2013.

From 2001 to 2004, Oquaye served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to India. In February 2005 he became Minister of Energy, and later he was moved to the post of Minister of Communications.
