Martey’s Bribery Claim A ‘Kwaku Ananse Story’ – Kwesi Pratt

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has described as fictional the bribe allegation by outgoing Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the outgoing Moderator revealed that some politicians attempted to bribe him with $100,000 to prevent him from making negative comments on national issues.

Prof. Martey, who failed to mention whether the politicians were NDC or NPP members alleged that the politicians also promised to give him a mansion at Trasaaco and a V8 vehicle if he remained silent on national issues.

He said “politicians have tried to muzzle me but they can’t. They come with bribes, fat envelopes … $100,000. Politicians came to my house with $100,000, not cedis, and also with promises that ‘if you keep quiet we’ll give you a house at Trasacco with a swimming pool. We will give you a four-wheel drive.

“These people were lucky I did not have big dogs in my house… I’d have released the dogs to bite them for the whole world to ask, ‘Ohh Moderator, why are you so wicked?’ and I’d have told them to ask them what they came to do,” he said to a chorus of laughter at a press conference in Accra to present a communiqué issued by the church after its 16th General Assembly.

But speaking on Radio Gold on Saturday, Mr. Pratt Jnr described his allegations as a “Kwaku Ananse story”.

“I still can’t get the motive of this bribe story from the Moderator and what his former PRO also said. It could be that both of them are telling lies or telling the truth. Seriously, I see it as a Kwaku Ananse story.

“My problem is why the Moderator didn’t talk about issues relating to his church at the press conference but chose to talk about politics and what politicians are doing and not doing”.

Kwesi Pratt added that Prof Martey by his comments is gradually subjecting the Presby Church to public ridicule.

“He is just destroying the church and I think members of the church have the responsibility to correct it even when he is out” he advised.
