Monday will be exactly 48-hours after the man was arrested, and the police are required under Article 14(3)(b) to put him before court within the period.

3News sources within the Police say the 29-year old unemployed, Clement Atsu, will be taken to Court Monday but would not say the charge(s) that will be preferred against him.

According to the sources, the Police will be seeking a remand for the man as they are still investigating the accident that occurred at Gomoa Adam, near Esarkyir junction on the Winneba – Cape Coast Highway.

According to the sources, except the man who has been under arrest, all the others affected in the accident have since Saturday returned to Accra for which reason the Police would have to contact them for investigation.

Atsu who was driving the unregistered Daewoo saloon car, is said to have failed to heed to the signal of the veep’s motorcade, and crashed into one of the black SUV V8 vehicles causing it to summersault before it rolled and landed upside down in the bush. The vehicle is the back up for the vice president Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.

Two journalists from Radio Gold and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation together with some security detail of the veep who were in that car at the time of the accident sustained injuries.

They had minor cuts while some complained of pains but were immediately given first aid by the vice presidential ambulance in the convoy. They have since their return to Accra reported to the 37 Military Hospital for medical attention.

How it happened

According to our correspondent, the veep was on his way to Dominase for the 20th anniversary of Nana Kwebu Ewusi, and also to join the people for the celebration of the Akwambo Festival.

He reports a pick-up that was heading towards Accra from Mankesim area, refused to heed to the signal of the police motorcade to stop and veered into the lane of the vice president’s convoy.

The vice president’s vehicle managed to swerve the pick-up vehicle, our correspondent reported, adding that the unregistered Daewoo, which had also defied the motorcade signal, crashed the second vehicle, which followed Mr Amissah-Arthur’s.

The pick-up driver, according to our correspondent, did not stop.
