Outgoing President John Mahama’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA) was filled with accounts of his works during the past four years in government.

Delivering his last State of the Nation Address on the floor of Parliament today, Thursday January 5, Mahama said he is proud to hand over a better Ghana to President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo.

In an unusually short address, Mahama told the Parliament that everything he did under his tenure was done with “good intention”. The outgoing President implied that all allegations of incompetence on his par, were as a result of a misunderstanding of his policies. He said he has done his best and would let history be the judge.

I’ll allow history to be the judge of how I have served my nation. How well I have done my part in running my lap of that relay. What that verdict will ultimately be, I cannot say, I can only say that I have done my best, given my all and done so with the best of intentions for my God and my country.

Mahama also touted his achievements during his tenure. On power, the outgoing President said he has made Ghana self sufficient in energy, after many years of energy crisis, popularly referred to as dumsor.

On education, he said his government has been able to see to a massive reduction in the number of dilapidated schools popularly referred to as “schools under trees”. He also said he has worked to address some challenges in the educational sector including low access and teacher absenteeism.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Mahama said he was passing on the baton of leadership “with pride, goodwill and determination”.

This is why I stand here today, holding the baton of leadership, prepared to pass it on with pride, goodwill and determination to Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo and to ask all Ghanaians to cheer him on as he runs this important relay for Ghana.

President Mahama lost the December elections to Nana Akufo-Addo, who would be sworn in on January 7. Mahama’s final SONA has drawn the curtain of the 6th parliament of the 4th republic, which will be officially dissolved on January 6, 2017.
