The address which was supposed to have held on Thursday, December 22, 2016, but was rescheduled, is in fulfilment of Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the president to give the address before stepping out of power.

In a statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament and signed by its Deputy Director, Ms Kate Addo, the president will have the address today at midnight. It also adds that after the address, the House will be dissolved in order to usher in the sixth Parliament.

President Mahama is expected to recap the achievements of his government in the last four years, as well as the policies he was able to bring. The address will herald the end of the life of the 6th Parliament of the fourth Republic which would officially be dissolved on the midnight of January 6, 2017.

“Minutes after the life of the sixth parliament stands dissolved, the next one is activated by the inauguration ceremony that will take place on the midnight of the [7th of January],” the statement reads.

While marking the end of the John Mahama administration, the Address will make way for the incoming President, Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, which will be inaugurated on January 7, 2017.

As part of his final activities, the outgoing president has commissioned some projects done under his administration and has cut the sod for some that have been passed by the parliament. He has also taken the President-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo and his incoming Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on a tour of the Flagstaff House at Kanda in Accra, ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
