Mahama Is Our Brother Yet We Are Thirsty

The paramount chief of Yapei, Yapeiwura Soale Alhassan, has said that although President Mahama is Gonja, and “our brother”, nothing in their livelihoods reflects the fact that the First Gentleman of the land hails from Gonjaland.

According to the Yapeiwura, his people have been neglected by President Mahama’s government as Yapei continues to be deprived of basic social amenities, including potable water.

“Though John Mahama comes from here and we are surrounded by water, we are thirsty. There is no drinking water at all,” he bemoaned.

Additionally, the Gonja chief noted that in the “whole of the Kusawgu Traditional Area, we have no secondary school and yet John Mahama is our brother. To say that a community of this nature has no secondary school is nothing to write home about. We cannot be sitting down boasting and claiming to have a president, which is not reflecting in our wellbeing.”

The Yapeiwura made this known on Friday, September 2, 2016, when the 2016 flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa AKufo-Addo, paid a courtesy call on him at his palace, on the last day of his tour of the Northern Region.

Thanking Nana Akufo-Addo for his visit, Yapeiwura Soale Alhassan prayed for a favourable outcome for the twice-failed presidential aspirant in the December 7 polls.

He further indicated that “the entirety of Yapei Kusawgu and Gonjaland is ready to see you at the presidency.”

Considering the size of the Yapei/Kusawgu Traditional Area, the Gonja Chief appealed to Nana Akufo-Add “to give us a district, because I know that you are the incoming president”.
