Last Minute Appointments: Mahama Has Done A Great Job

A member of the legal and communications team of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, says President John Mahama should rather be lauded for his last minute decisions instead of bastardized.

President Mahama on Tuesday generated a public outcry following his decision to appoint and swear in two commissioners for Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) respectively.

But Mr Amaliba on the Ultimate Breakfast Show said the president acted within his purview in the country’s constitution and has not broken any law as some persons are making it look like.

He argued that the persons who were appointed into the two bodies are Ghanaians, have the requisite qualification and have also gone through the laid down processes before their appointment and subsequent swearing in.

“President Mahama acted perfectly within the law and there is nothing wrong with it. I have heard my colleagues from the New Patriotic Party talk about morality and these smacks of dishonesty. The law is the law, the law is not morality. President Kufuor made similar appointments on the eve of leaving office in 2008 and there was no noise like we are hearing. Why must that of President Mahama generate a lot of noise”, he quizzed.

He insists that no president must be treated better than the other reiterating that Mahama has not broken any law warning those who are heading to courts that they will be shamed.

“No court can restrain the President from exercising his constitutional power. As I said the law is the law, the law is not morality. There is more to what these people are talking about… Nana Addo cannot come and undo the CHRAJ and NCCE appointments”, he stated emphatically.
