Spokesperson, Frank Agyekum, said the conditions for the resettlement of the former president was not met by the erstwhile Mahama administration as required by the Chinery Hesse Committee.

However, he indicated that the former President until recently has been given a house to use as an office after some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) chased him out of his Ridge office.

His comment comes after former President John Mahama requested that he should be allowed to keep his Cantonments official residence as his retirement home.

This has since generated a lot of controversy after the former Communications Minister, Edward Omane Boamah claimed in a statement Sunday that ex-President Mahama had been given the green light to occupy the residence under controversy.

But in a rebuttal, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who speaks for the new government’s side of the transition team, stressed there was a request from President Mahama, asking permission to keep the residence but a decision had not been reached.

Commenting on the issue on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Frank Agyekum said there is nothing wrong with the former president requesting to keep his house.

As stipulated in the Chinery Hesse Committee, he said former presidents are entitled to a house and an office of their choice.

However, Frank Agyekum revealed that Mr. Kufuor was denied that privilege of choosing his own house, rather the state offered him one without his input.

“President Mahama rejected the apartment at Trasacco Valley located off the Accra-Tema Motorway offered by the Mills’ administration because he was not consulted”, he added.

Mr. Agyekum maintained that the government disrespected Mr Kufuor by simply dropping off the keys to the house without even the courtesy of his input into the construction of the facility.
