At a meeting of 133 assembly members held at the True Vine Hotel at Adiebeba in Kumasi on Friday, March 17, Osei Assibey Antwi received a majority of votes to be mayor of Ghana’s second largest city.

There was only one spoilt ballot as 132 assembly members voted ‘YES’ for the president’s nominee.

A former Deputy Ashanti Region Minister, Mr Assibey Antwi expressed gratitude to the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, FF Antoh, whom he paid tribute to as the first supervisor to work under.

The current regional chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was absent but the newly endorsed MCE expressed gratitude to him.

“We have made history as the first metropolitan assembly to decide on President Nana Akufo-Addo’s MCE nominee,” Mr Assibey Antwi told the gathering, full of his supporters.

TV3’s regional correspondent, William Evans Nkum, reported from the venue that white handkerchiefs were handed to each and every assembly member prior to the voting.

Presiding Member Abraham Boadi told Evans Nkum that the exercise is to record a “one-touch approval” and confirm the former deputy regional minister.

Ashanti Region Minister Simon Osei-Mensah was present at the meeting.

The new mayor takes over from Kojo Bonsu, who resigned prior to the expiry of his term.

He was born 1965 at Kuwawu Wonoo.

He holds an MBA in Marketing and a certified member of the Institute of Commercial Management.

He was Deputy Ashanti Region Minister from 2006 t0 2009.

Before then, he served as Assistant Inspector of Taxes responsible for Financial and Administrative at Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
