The Kenyan government on Wednesday launched two task forces tasked with reviewing the country’s tourism strategy.
Cabinet Secretary for Tourism Najib Balala inaugurated the National Convention Bureau (NCB) and the Tourism Protection Service (TPS) to provide leadership in marketing destination and to handle issues of safety and security in the tourism industry, respectively.
The main purpose of the NCB will be to increase the number of events, conferences and meetings held across the country, while the TPS task force will seek to look after the welfare of tourists and tourism facilities.
Both task forces are mandated to provide a report in the next 60 days that will provide a road map for the way forward on the two matters.
The move came as statistics from Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) show Kenya received about 100,000 more tourists in the period ending September compared to a similar period last year as improved security and intensified marketing of the country as a tourist destination paid off.
Some 655,058 tourists visited Kenya through its two main airports namely Jomo Kenyatta in Nairobi, and Moi in Mombasa, in the first three quarters, up from 555,856 in 2015.
The 18-percent increase in tourist arrivals is good news to the sector that was initially on its knees following persistent attacks from terror group Al-Shabaab. Enditem
