Dr. Joyce Aryee says it is quite unfortunate for the outgoing President to say he has achieved a great deal in the education sector, when there have been massive complaints from stakeholders regarding many pertinent issues.

President Mahama had during his last State of the Nation Address (SONA) yesterday, January 5, indicated that Ghana’s education sector has improved significantly under his tenure. The outgoing President had said that more teachers have been trained in his administration. Mahama during his address, also said that teachers are more available and are more evenly distributed than in the past.

But the former CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines believes it is unfortunate for the president to have indicated that teachers have been trained, when some teachers have consistently complained about not being posted.

Speaking on Joy FM, she described Mahama’s achievements on education as a slap in the face.

For me, it was almost like a slap in the face because teachers have been complaining that they have not been posted.

She pointed out it was more or less a campaign, for the President to tout achievements that were not implemented.

Dr. Aryee continued that Ghana’s education sector has a lot of issues impeding its growth and development. She explained that government needs to look into the quality of teachers employed in schools, as the nation’s future depends on how well the younger ones are raised.

Dr. Joyce Aryee also talked about Mahama’s achievement of providing schools with textbooks needed for learning. On that the former CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines said that though textbooks have been provided, stakeholders need to go through them to see how relevant they are to students.

Dr Aryee in the end, commended the outgoing President for his bravery during his final SONA. According to her, considering it is not easy to go down as a one-term President, Mahmaa did very well under the circumstances.

President Mahama’s final SONA, has drawn the curtain of the 6th Parliament of the 4th republic, which would officially be dissolved by midnight of January 6.
