‘It’s Time To Use NPP’s Grievance Procedures’

A lecturer at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra, Mr Ustarz Jibreel Abubakar, popularly known as Babayara, has detached himself from a statement calling on the President to appoint him as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Bawku Municipality in the Upper East Region.

According to him, the content of that statement, which was issued by some concerned youth from the Bawku Central constituency, never had “my blessing and as such is not in sync with my political orientation.”

“It is with high sense of humility that I wish to advise my fellow NPP family members that it is time we began to use the party’s system and procedures to address our grievances. We need to use the party hierarchy to seek redress,” Mr Abubakar said.

He said Bawku Central was one of the favoured constituencies in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government, adding, “We have our son Alhaji Sule Yiremea as a member of the Council of State. Some constituencies have not had even a single appointment yet.”

Background

A group calling itself the Concerned Youth of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bawku Central constituency in the Upper East Region last Saturday, at a press conference, expressed its displeasure at what it considered as neglect of the constituency by President Akufo-Addo.

The group could not fathom why the Bawku Central constituency was left out in the appointments of ministers, deputy ministers and other relevant positions by President Akufo-Addo despite numerous competent persons from the area who could support execute the government’s transformational agenda.

On the appointment of an MCE for the area, the group was of the strong conviction that Mr Abubakar or Amadu Moqtar should be considered by the President to serve the people of Bawku.

However, Mr Abubakar expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the organisers of the press conference for thinking of him but distanced himself from the statement.

According to him, the appointment of the MCE was the sole prerogative of the President which “finds expression in Article 243(1) of the 1992 Constitution, a right that I am not too sure of the circumstance under which any individual or group of people can take away from him.”

Too early

He said it was too early for any individual or group to begin to rant, adding; “We should give the President the space and time and support the government with prayers to put this country on the path of progress and development.”

“It is against this background that I wish to call on all and sundry to close our ranks within the Bawku Central constituency. We cannot be expecting new results when we continuously use the same formula. There must be a paradigm shift if only we want to remain relevant in the political landscape of the party. May Allah bless our homeland Ghana,” he noted.
