During his visit, Mr. Weah applauded the President for his determination and resilience; having relentlessly vied several times for presidency -an act which finally earned him a crown on his third attempt. The Liberian senator also commended Nana Addo, as well as electoral stakeholders for seeing to a peaceful free and fair election. According to him, the conduct of Ghana’s elections and subsequent peaceful change of government, has cemented Ghana’s position as a true beacon of democracy on the African continent.

The following issues were discussed as George Weah visits Ghana:

Weah called on the President to make his tenure one to boost bilateral relation between Ghana and Liberia. He also raised calls for the realizations of the vision of continental integration.

With elections in Liberia coming up in October this year, the senator also called on the President and Ghana at large, to help see to the actualization of credible polls at the election, to ensure a tranquil transition process.

President Akufo-Addo on his part, assured the senator of Ghana’s support towards deepening and sustaining democracy in the region. He also assured him of the country’s support in October, when Liberia selects a new President.

George Weah, a former World Player, is the second high profile football personality to visit President Akufo-Addo. The first was the legendary Ivory Coast player Didier Drogba who was at the Flagstaff House last Friday.

The ex footballer hopes to run a second time for President of Liberia, after a failed bid in 2005. His previous presidential bid, in 2005, was defeated by current President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. It is important to note that the current Liberian President Ellem Johnson Sirleaf  will be ending her tenure this year and under the country’s constitution, she can’t re-run.

Senator Weah who was a former AC Milan striker, announced mid last year, his intentions of vying again for Presidency in the 2017 elections. Mr. Weah who belongs to the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) party, has said he has a vision to transform his country -Liberia.

George Weah who also played for Paris St German and Chelsea FC, was the highest-ranking African footballer in FIFA’s list of greatest players of the 20th century. He was world footballer of the year in 1995 and is one of Africa’s best players. George Weah won two league titles with AC Milan and is also a three time African footballer of the year, among other honours.

During his football days, George Weah became a UN Goodwill Ambassador after which he moved into politics.
