The three died in circumstances the students have described as mysterious and the situation has thrown the student body into a state of panic.

The students have been allowed to go home following disturbances on campus Friday night linked to the deaths.

Apart from the final year students who are writing their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), all other students unwilling to stay on campus have been permitted to go home.

Chaotic scenes were recorded at Kumasi Academy with a student population of over 2,000 after parents tried to enter the school to take away their wards following reports of disturbances on campus.

Some students were protesting against the school administration after the three students died within two weeks.

The students whose identities are yet to be confirmed were taken ill and attended to at the school’s sick bay but later granted exeats to seek further medical treatments. But they passed away shortly.

“We do not know the cause of death, however, they did not die here on campus,” Assistant Headmaster Ernest Wiafe told Joy News.

Earlier health authorities had indicated the deaths may be due to food poisoning, but school authorities have denied this.

Mr Wiafe said the students did not die while on campus. He said all three went home and were taken to various health facilities where they passed away.

“[The deaths] did not happen the same day, they happened on different days within the span of about 15 days. It had nothing to do with food poisoning,” he said.

The Assistant Headmaster maintained that with a student population of over 2,800 they have not “recorded any death in a very long time. These are just unfortunate times.”
