Flagbearer of Independent People’s Party (IPP) Kofi Akpaloo has indicated that he will do away with the primitive way of compelling Senior High School (SHS) and basic primary female students cut their hair when voted into power in December.
He said both day and boarding students across the country will be given the opportunity to braid their hair and attach ribbons of all colours.
Most hairdressers according to him, have been complaining of not getting customers to do their hair and therefore this will be an avenue to address this problem.
He believes plaiting of hair will not make students dull or less smart and that it will create employment for some people.
Speaking on Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo hosted by Kwame Adinkrah, Mr. Akpaloo said this policy idea will open up the economy to grow, saying Ghana can replicate Western policy.
‘Those who want to plait their hair will be given the opportunity, no law will prevent them from plaiting their hair.
There is nothing wrong for students to braid their hair, there are people in this country who don’t have job to do, we are talking about two million female students, if you allow these kids to plait their hair, you are creating wealth, give everybody the option, the straight-jacket way of students cutting their hair should be a thing of the past.
Somebody will buy hair cream for touch up, another will also buy pomade for the hair and this will grow the economy, the one working on the hair is generating income, cream manufacturer is also getting money, the one who produced ribbons will equally get money,’ he explained.
