Former President John Mahama has rubbished media reports that he was in Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo region on Monday to commiserate with the families of the accident victims.

A section of the media is reporting that he has visited the bereaved families with pictures to accompany the story.

However, it has been established that those pictures were taken last year when he visited accident victims in the same vicinity when he was president.

The news of his purported visit has taken centre stage on social media as to whether he actually visited or some elements are “playing propaganda.”

Mahama took to Twitter to cure the confusion:

Thanks for the messages but I wasn’t in Kintampo y’day. Photos are from my visit to MetroMass accident victims when I was President.— John Dramani Mahama (@JDMahama) March 21, 2017

CLOSURE

Meanwhile, the Waterfalls has been closed down indefinitely following the passing of 19 students after a freak tree accident over the weekend.

According to the Minister of Tourism, Catherine Afeku, the closure is to enable the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and other stakeholders embark on a “comprehensive safety audit” of the facility.

“We are also doing so for all major tourist sites in the country,” the minister told Francis Abban, host of the Morning Starr on Starr 103.5FM.

Madam Afeku commended officials of the District Assembly, the medical staff of the Kintampo General Hospital and the security agencies for their swift response to the disaster.

TRAGIC LOSS

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has described the Kintampo disaster as a tragic loss to the nation when he visited the site Monday.

Nineteen persons died in the fatal incident after hilltop trees crashed on them following heavy rains on Sunday.

The victims were mostly students from the Wenchi Senior High School.

About 22 others are receiving treatment at the Kintampo Government Hospital.
