The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Owusu Obimpeh has revealed he nearly went mad after the party’s defeat in last year’s elections.
He indicated that he was very sure the NDC was cruising to victory given the unprecedented infrastructural development undertaken by the erstwhile Mahama administration thus the results of the 2016 general elections came to him as a shock.
The NDC then incumbent managed to secure 44.40 of valid votes cast in spite of the vigorous and expensive campaign as compared to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 53.85 percent.
President Mahama’s defeat makes him the first incumbent to lose an election since Ghana returned to multi-party democracy in 1992.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Chairman Obimpeh said he under voluntary house arrest after the defeat.
Especially when they promised to win one million votes in the Ashanti region, the NDC man said he couldn’t watch TV or even listen to radio.
“Losing elections in the Ashanti region is very difficult especially for the NDC because it is the stronghold of the NPP. If you don’t take care, you can’t even open your gate because people will mock you” he noted.
Chairman Obimpeh who claimed had decided not to speak on radio till April 1, 2017, said, he now feels relieved after granting the interview on Asempa FM.
