A deluge of tweets have been directed at the president, mocking him for celebrating this year’s Christmas holidays in his village of Bole. According to the scathing remarks, the president only chose to spend his holiday in Bole because of the shame he felt after he lost at the December elections.

A lot of other remarks from Twitter users suggested that the president had gone from the palace to the pit, having spent Christmas last year outside the country, specifically in Dubai.

In his response to these and many more ideas suggested by the mocking tweets, President Mahama dismissed the claims, clearing the notion that he spent Christmas in Dubai last year. According to the president, he was in his constituency on Christmas day of 2015, instead of in Dubai as wrongfully believed.

However, it is known for a fact, that the president did indeed spend Christmas in Dubai in 2013, where he met with the Prime Minister of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Leaving Accra on Monday, December 23, 2013, the president flew to Dubai with his family where they spent both the Christmas and the New Year Holidays.

Recall that at the time, the then NPP General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie had criticized the president for leaving the country to go enjoy, at a time when the country needed him the most, at a time of economic hardship.

The president had equally responded to the claim at the time, stating that he only went for a holiday, as every man who works should be entitled to a time of relaxation with his family.
