Mother Ghana celebrated her diamond jubilee yesterday March 06 2017. Though there have been some setbacks, the nation sure has a lot to celebrate in terms of cultural heritage, identity, values, and so on. There are so many things that Ghana, formerly known as Gold Coast, is known for. Ranging from clothing to food, there are some very unique values in which the country and her people are known for.

One of the interesting historical facts about Ghana facts is that in 1957, the country became the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to gain total independence. While there are many other interesting historical facts, let’s take a look at some of the things the country is known for.

In Ghana, the country’s traditional cuisine is surely second to none. Ghana’s value and respect for culture, tremendously reflects on the country’s local cuisine. Offering some of the tastiest dishes around the world, the country has a wild range of delicacies that are capable of making a tourist change his mind and settle, or make a man propose to a woman.

Waakye (pronounced Wa chi) shows Ghana’s undying love for rice and beans. Waakye is a very spicy combination of beans and rice that is served with fried fish,egg, spaghetti and fried chicken. Not forgetting Banku (cooked corn dough and cassava dough); this is the lover of many Ghanaians who enjoy traditional dishes.

Jollof rice is also one of Ghana’s major dishes. Mostly the main dish at an occasion; Jollof rice is a mixture of rice and tomato sauce mixed with other tasty ingredients and garnishing. Also not forgetting Kenkey (boiled maize dough), another fufu like staple served with stew or soup. These are just a few of the various staple foods of Ghanaians.

Just like clothing is a major necessity for man; to the Ghanaian man, his cultural fabric ‘Kente’, is that one fabric he cannot do without.

Kente is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth strips. It is native to the Akan ethnic group of South Ghana. The fabric is made in Akan lands such as Ashanti Kingdom, (Bonwire, Adanwomase, Sakora Wonoo, Ntonso in the Kwabre areas of the Ashanti Region) and by Akans in Ivory Coast. Kente; the identity of every Ghanaian, comes in a variety of colours and designs. Each colour and design on a Kente signifies something.

Ghana is known for its liberal practice of different religions. The most common religious practice in the country are Christianity and Islam. There are many Christians and Muslims in the country. There is also the practice of traditional worship by some sections of the country’s population.

Ghana is a country blessed with rich agricultural and mineral resources. The country which is historically known for its gold, has gold as its primary export. The country is also rich with diamonds, aluminium, Oil, which also accounts for a large part of her exports. Ghana is also known for its large production of many types of Woods.

Cocoa is Ghana’s second-largest export. Being one of the key suppliers of Cocoa to big beverage companies like Cadbury, Ghana is second only to Ivory Coast, in terms of its ability to grow and export cocoa beans for consumption all over the world. Timber, industrial diamonds, bauxite, manganese, fish, rubber, hydropower, petroleum, silver, salt, limestone; are some of the resourcesthe country is known for.

Ghana’s population in 2005 was estimated by the United Nations (UN) at  22,019,000. However the current population of Ghana is estimated to be 27 million, up from the official 2010 census figure of 24.2 million.

Ghana is a tropical country. Except in the north, there are two rainy seasons, from April through June and from September to November. Squalls occur in the north during March and April, followed by occasional rain until August and September, when the rainfall reaches its peak.

Ghanaians are well known for a whole number of sporting activities. But the major sport the country is known for is Football. Ghana’s football team -Black Stars, have carved a niche for themselves in the world of sports. Ghana’s Black Stars, are till date honored for their remarkable feats in the world of football both nationally and internationally.

You cannot emphasize on the achievements of Ghana’s football team without mentioning names like; Asamoah Gyan, Ayew brothers -Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew, Christian Atsu, Thomas Partey, Baba Rahman, and many more.
