Leader of the Minority in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has called on Ghanaians to push for “deeper electoral reforms” as parliament approves budgetary allocation to the Electoral Commission on Thursday.
Requesting the Finance Minister to consider increasing the amount estimation for the Commission, Mr. Iddrisu pointed out that what was allocated to the EC in 2017 is “inadequate” to improve the electoral landscape of Ghana.
The Tamale South MP suggested to colleague legislators that the first step in the reforms would be for the EC to improve its data collection system.
The country, he said, should also build a consensus demanding that the EC declares presidential results not later than 48 hours or 72 hours latest.
“In the world of technology we should come to a consensus as a country, as to the time period allowed for the declaration of the results. Subject to a final declaration which the constitution requires is to be gazetted because for persons who may want to question the outcome of election will be able to do so”, he recommended.
The Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also advised the Commission to up its game.
Meanwhile, a sum of GHC33,827,268.00 has been approved for the Electoral Commission as its budgetary estimates for the 2017 fiscal year by Parliament.
