Whoever promises education must come with evidence of achievement.
President John Mahama’s consistent and unfailing efforts are in line with the promises he made when he first took office.
H. E John Dramani Mahama campaigned with many promises among which one was progressive free quality education and improving access to quality education for all. This is evidenced in his numerous achievements.
Having put things in place to ensure access to quality education for all, he has assured Ghanaians that his next government will absorb all registration fees for both West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and Basic School Certificate Examination (BECE).
In our local parlance our elders say “, “nia ofro dua pa no na wo pia no” the one who pursues a good cause deserves a push.
In the last four years to make education progressively free, accessible and quality, The NDC’s John Mahama administration has done the following:
The building of 200 new community day secondary schools with 14 plus commissioned among the 41 completed, which will admit new students for the 2016/17 academic year. Teachers and other staff will be recruited to administer these 41 schools as means of creating jobs.
The 200 new community day secondary school is aside the number of Millennium City Schools, built to eradicate “shift-system” in the Accra metropolis (Mamprobi, Darkuman, Dansoman, Lartebiokoshi, Zamarama Line etc).
A total of 1,614 out of 2,578 basic school projects have been completed the Schools Under Trees programme and a number of teacher bungalows, education offices, sanitation blocks and 203 out of 232 classroom blocks have been completed.
Over 100 million exercise books, 12.5 million English, Mathematics & Science textbook and 60,000 laptops have been distributed as well as the distribution of 10,000 locally produced school sandals to pupils in selected deprives districts. Under the Complementary Basic Education Program to rope in out-of-school children: a total of 124,177 pupils have been enrolled.
Teachers were not left out in all these effort to boost the education sector, 60,000 teachers representing 56% of teacher at the basic education level have received career development training, 1,000 teacher undergo in-service training for the teaching of mathematics and science.
In his next term further incentives and benefits will accrue to more teachers especially those in Math and Science, as well as those that will accept postings to remote areas.
Three African Education Centers of Excellence are being established in Ghana.
West African Center for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) at the University of Ghana, West African Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) and Regional Centers of Excellence for Water and Environmental Sanitation at KNUST.
It is on this evidence of his achievement in education, that the absorption of the WASSCE and BECE registration fees becomes a believable and more so, doable, promise.
