The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), prior to the December 7 election, had promised Ghanaians to fix the economy with sound policies.

Minister-designate for Finance Ken Ofori-Atta, speaking to Class News’ presidential correspondent, Kwesi Parker-Wilson, said although there were challenges, government would be committed to the cause of ensuring economic freedom.

“You make commitments and then you work hard towards it and we are committed to it. We did it in 2001 and we will be able to do it again,” he stated.

“The president has put a team together; we are very comfortable with it. I think there is money to be made. We have a lot of revenue generation [but] we are not doing enough. I think some expenses were too much. We can manage that, but more importantly how do we create economic freedom? How do you get people working for themselves? And I think that is our challenge.”

According to him, government will create an enabling environment for economic freedom, “make the macro [economy] a little more stable and we are in this boat together”, adding: “It’s not like we are magicians coming from somewhere to just wave a wand. We have people who are really committed to seeing that our people need release and we can do much better than we have done and if we get along together, we should be able to do that.”
