The suspect is being processed by the police for court. A police source at the Mankranso District Police Command told the Daily Graphic that Sani had apologised to the two priests.

The source said Sani rendered an unqualified apology at a meeting at the police station at Mankranso yesterday but was unable to indicate whether or not the victims accepted the apology.

As of the time of filing this report, Sani and the two priests were set to meet some officials of the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

Public reaction

Meanwhile, there have been mixed reactions to reports that Sani had apologised to the priests. While some were of the view that the apology was enough, others thought the suspect should be made to pay an undisclosed amount to the priests.

Some even said nothwithstanding the apology, Sani should be tried.

Background

Sani was reported to have assaulted the two Catholic priests last Saturday at Adugyama in the Ahafo Ano South District in the Ashanti Region.

He was said to have subjected Rev. Father Anthony Awuah Boateng to severe beatings and inflicted machete wounds on Rev. Father Daniel Afum.

According to the police, Rev. Fr Boateng was travelling from Adugyama to Biemso Number Two in his pick-up last Saturday when Mohammed, who was riding a motorbike, crossed him.

The priest, who was infuriated, was said to have pulled up and advised the suspect not to ride carelessly next time, but Mohammed became offended.

When Rev. Fr Boateng was driving back to Adugyama, the suspect chased him on his motorbike to the mission house where he assaulted the priest.

According to the police, when the victim’s colleague, Father Afum, intervened to calm nerves, the suspect vented his spleen on him and inflicted machete wounds on him.

Both priests were rushed to hospital for medical attention.
