Pius Kyere, a 20-year-old former student of the St. James Seminary/Senior High School, in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana, has been declared the overall best candidate in the 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Best WASSCE Candidate 2016 Award was conferred on Pius Kyere on Wednesday, 8 March, 2017 at the annual WAEC Excellence Awards held at the Sakyi Asare Menako Hall in Accra.

He went home with mouthwatering prizes which included $400 and a laptop computer, a scholarship package of $1,000 dollars, and a $5000 investment account with the UMB bank!

Following Pius Kyere, the Best WASSCE Candidate 2016, were Benjamin Bortey Sango of Accra Academy and Richmond Kwame Mensah, also of St. James Seminary/Senior High School, who emerged second and third best respectively.

Students who emerged best in other specific areas include;

Speaking at the occasion, the Education Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, advised candidates to shun all forms of examination malpractice. According to Mr, Opoku Prempeh, students need not engage in examination malpractice for them to be successful in their various exams. He added that the same applies to all other life endeavours, while stressing that “short cuts don’t pay”.

The Education Minister promised that his ministry “will continue to put in place necessary interventions and policies to ensure that the right environment for quality teaching and learning is created in schools at all levels”.

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination is the exam taken by secondary school leavers in Anglophone (English-speaking) West African countries which include – Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leon and Liberia.

It is an annual examination that comes in two batches – the May/June and the November/December batches respectively. The May/June batch, also known as the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), is meant for candidates who are current students of both private and public schools. The results for this batch is usually ready by August.

Otherwise known as General Certificate Examination (GCE), the Nov/Dec batch is open to both students of private and public schools and others who may not be current secondary school students. The results are usually out in December.

The major distinction between the two is that school uniforms are compulsory in the former, while it is not in the latter.

It is in the practice of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), to release the names of the best performing candidates in the certificate exams each year in their different categories.

The winners are subsequently rewarded with various awards, honours and prizes from both the Examination Council, the country, and other sponsors as the case may. This is done under the umbrella of the WAEC Excellence Awards.

For the past five years, Ghanaian students have been pocketing the prestigious award of overall Best WASSCE Candidate, alongside other categories.

Last year, students from Ghana swept all the three topmost prizes at the WAEC Excellence Awards, with all the three awardees being former students of the Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast.
