The Ghana Football Association (GFA) are beginning to take the necessary steps towards recruiting a new coach for the national team. The Executive Committee of the GFA on Tuesday February 28, formed a six-member committee headed by the Association President, Kwesi Nyatakyi, to see to the hiring of a new Black Stars coach.

Other members of the committee include; George Afriyie, chairman of the Black Stars management committee; Francis Oti Akenteng, Technical Director of the GFA; Opoku Nti, former Black Stars player and member of the Executive Committee; Alex Asante, Director of International Competitions, and a representative from the Ministry of Youth & Sports.

According to the committee, the GFA coach hunt will be carried out using two methods – headhunting and applications from interested coaches. This means that they have to go in search of coaches who are eligible for the post while also assessing applications from interested persons.

On the same Tuesday, Assistant Coach of the Black Stars, Maxwell Konadu, was appointed to coach the national team for the meantime. Konadu will be in charge of the team until a permanent coach is employed to take the place of Grant.

Professor Joseph Minter who has been serving as the Black Stars Psychologist has also been appointed to assist Maxwell Konadu as Deputy Coach. He will however, be doing this alongside his original role as the national team’s psychologist.

“Maxwell Konadu has been named interim Black Stars coach until the substantive coach is named. He will be assisted by Professor Joseph Mintah, who will also continue in his role as the team psychologist,” a statement from GFA reads.

Israeli Coach, Avram Grant resigned after failing to lead the Black Stars to final victory in the just concluded 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. His resignation came few weeks before the end of his deal which expired on 28 February, 2017.

One Coach To Head Black Stars and Home-based Players

The Executive Committee of the GFA has also revealed that the practice of hiring different coaches for the main Black Stars team and the local one will be stopped.

According to the national football governing body, one coach will henceforth be responsible for both the local Black Stars team, as well as main team (internationals). The local Black Stars is a team made up of solely home-based players who only play in the Ghana Premier League.

Applications for the post of Black Stars are open to all eligible and interested candidates; according to the GFA.
