The Third Ghana Skills and Technology Fair, an initiative to exhibit the outcomes of financial support to selected grantees in the skills and technology sector across the country, opened in Accra on Wednesday.
Skills development has become a highly topical development policy issue in Ghana in the past decade. The Ghana skills and technology development project is one of the government’s interventions to improve the quality of skills and technology.
Initiated in 2011, the project aims at improving demand-driven skills development and increased adoption of new technologies in selected economic sectors of Ghana.
More than 50 selected grantees from small, medium and larger scale businesses have exhibited their products to prospective customers in the three-day fair.
The Minister of Education, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, said the Skills Development Fund’s support of 51.9 million U. S. dollars to 646 businesses had led to the creation of 13,300 direct new jobs and a 60 percent increase in productivity of the beneficiary businesses.
She thanked the World Bank for its immense support in committing 70 million dollars to finance the project.
The Executive Director of COTVET, Sebastian Deh, said the positive effect of the project over the past decade was ample demonstration of the government of Ghana’s commitment to the upgrading of skills and technology especially within the private sector as an engine of growth. Enditem
