The electorate will have a choice of seven presidential aspirants in this election. The seven presidential candidates include; incumbent President Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Edward Mahama of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings of the national Democratic Party (NDP) and Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive Peoples’ Party (PPP).

Also contesting is Jacob Osei Yeboah, who is contesting as an independent candidate. To win, a candidate has to garner more than 50 percent of the vote.

Ghanaians will also elect their Members of Parliament (MPs) today. According to the EC, 1,158 parliamentary candidates are contesting the 275 parliamentary seats. The parliamentary results will be declared at the constituency collation centres by the returning officers in each of the constituencies.

President Mahama’s strongest competition, Nana Addo of the NPP, will be competing for presidency for the third time. The two also ran in year 2012, in an election which gained international media attention, after the NPP contested the validity of the results of the polls at the Supreme Court.

A hearing on the case -which lasted for 8 months had proceeded, despite the fact that Mahama had already been sworn in as President of the country.
