The New Patriotic Party’s Member of Parliament for Lawra, and Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways Anthony Karbo suggested a dog meat factory in the three regions of the north during his vetting which he said has the potential to generate additional national revenue.

A large number of people in South Korea as well as in China, Vietnam, and the Philippines, consume dog meat.

The dog meat industry is worth in excess of 2 billion dollars annually in South Korea.

This translates into the annual slaughter of over 2.5 million dogs are served in over 20,000 restaurants nationwide in South Korea.

About 7,000 dogs slaughtered every single day globally and It is estimated that over 100,000 tons of dog meat is consumed annually, including 93,600 tons used to produce ‘health’ tonics called “Gae Soju” which is prepared by boiling dogs with various herbs until it become a thick liquid.

MP for Lawra Mr. Karbo is of the view Ghana should consider a dog meat factory for the export of the product.

“The dog is a delicacy and it is such a huge delicacy in Korea and China and it is an exportable product. There are dog hunters in Bolga who go around buying dogs and hunting for dogs.”

Dogs raised for meat however endure miserable conditions while the method of slaughter is usually extremely brutal which has raised a lot of concerns by animal activists.

He further indicated that “we could have a cat factory in the Volta region” he suggested.

It is estimated that around 9.23 million cats are eaten in China each year. Cats are made into health tonics which is called “Goyangyee Soju”.
